Use commas in a series (list) of 3 or more things.

Use commas to separate nouns of address (the name of the person you're talking to).

Examples:

John, please come here.

Use commas to separate appositives (extra word or phrase that tells more about the word beside it).

Examples:

Timmy, a student in my class, is working very hard.

Examples: 

I love apples, oranges, and bananas.

The small, brown, furry kitten played quietly.

I took off my jacket, hung it in my locker, and sat down in my seat.

I wonder, Mr. Wilson, if I could borrow some sugar.
