REASON
Before FANBOYS when they combine 2 sentences.
Between 2 combined sentences if a subordinate conjunctionbegins the sentence
In a series (list) of 3 or more things
To separate nouns of address
With appositives
After the (s)he said part when it starts the quotation
After a quote IF the quote should end with a period AND the (s)he said part comes last.
After transition words and phrases
Between city and state
Between day and year
After the opening of a letter (salutation)
After the closing of a letter
EXAMPLE
I like cake, but Miss Flowers likes pie.
Because I payed close attention, I learned how to use commas correctly.
I woke up, brushed my teeth, and got dressed.
Stephenie, stop taking my posters off the wall!
Brooke, the funniest girl in class, understood commas.
He said, "Hello."
"Today is Monday," he said. (His sentence normally ends with a period, but we changed it to a comma.)
