04 Cellular Chemistry

Cellular Chemistry
Energy used by organisms comes from the metabolism of chemicals. Photosynthesis and respiration are processes used by plants to capture sunlight to make carbohydrates and transform starch into usable energy by the plant. Much of the energy transferred by organisms is used to maintain their internal homeostatic balance.
What should you be able to do by the end of the unit? 
  • Students will be able to analyze the relationship of photosynthesis and respiration and how it relates to energy transfer and matter cycles.
  • Students will be able to plan and conduct an investigation to provide evidence that feedback mechanisms maintain homeostasis.
What questions should you be able to answer by the end of the unit? 
  • To what extent do people depend on plant life?

  • How does chemistry allow cells to maintain their internal environment?

  • Do plants really need people and other animals?
