First-day information:
Welcome back to ALEKS for another semester!
The math department rule is that students have three semesters to finish the ALEKS work. You have special permission to do a fourth semester, but that is all. You will need to finish the ALEKS pie this semester to pass the course. I want to give you special help, starting now, to be sure that you can do as much as possible this semester and then help you plan for your future math courses. The sooner we identify any potential problems you might have in finishing development math this semester, and start trying to solve them, the better off you will be in the long run.
I'm sure you know that a crucial requirement in the class is to work productively on the software for 8-10 hours per week (both in class and out of class) to learn math and to demonstrate that learning on assessments in the software that happen approximately once every 7 to 10 days. If you cannot work productively on this web-based software at home, you MUST arrange to come to a school computer lab to work on it at several times during the week in addition to your class time.
Here's what you will do on the first day of class:

Take an initial assessment test in the software. If you follow my instructions carefully, you will import the results of the work you did the previous semester into our current ALEKS course. That happens BEFORE the initial comprehensive assessment for this semester.
If you care to do any review of the material, use the pages of formulas at the back of your binder from the previous semester or your review work in your binder. The more you remember, the fewer topics you will have to relearn in learning mode.
Many resources are available on the web to help students review. Many students have found PurpleMath to be useful.
Handouts: (I will give you printed copies of all of these on the first class day!)
