First-day information:
A crucial requirement in the class is to work productively on the software for 10 hours per week (both in class and out of class) to learn math and to demonstrate that learning on assessments in the software that happen approximately once every 7 to 10 days. If you cannot work productively on this web-based software at home, you MUST arrange to come to a school computer lab to work on it at several times during the week in addition to your class time.
Here's what you will do on the first day of class:
The initial assessment will determine which topics you have already mastered sufficiently and which you need learning activities to master. If you want to get through developmental math as quickly as possible, you might review some on the math you already know. Many students find that some review on these three topics helps them place higher in the initial assessment:
arithmetic of negative numbers
solving linear equations
fractions
Many resources are available on the web to help students review. These are the appropriate pages in PurpleMath:
Arithmetic of negative numbers: http://www.purplemath.com/modules/negative.htm
Solving linear equations: http://www.purplemath.com/modules/solvelin.htm
