First-day information:
Welcome back to ALEKS for another semester!
The math department rule is that students have three semesters to finish the ALEKS work. And this is your third semester.
Since this is your third (and last) semester in ALEKS, I want to give you special help, starting now, to be sure that you can finish this last semester. The sooner we identify any potential problems you might have in finishing development math this semester, and start trying to solve them, the better off you will be in the long run.
I'm sure you know that a crucial requirement in the class is to work productively on the software for 8-10 hours per week (both in class and out of class) to learn math and to demonstrate that learning on assessments in the software that happen approximately once every 7 to 10 days. If you cannot work productively on this web-based software at home, you MUST arrange to come to a school computer lab to work on it at several times during the week in addition to your class time.
Here's what you will do on the first day of class:

Take an initial assessment test in the software. If you follow my instructions carefully, you will import the results of the work you did the previous semester into our current ALEKS course. That happens BEFORE the initial comprehensive assessment for this semester.
If you care to do any review of the material, use the pages of formulas at the back of your binder from the previous semester or your review work in your binder. The more you remember, the fewer topics you will have to relearn in learning mode.
Many resources are available on the web to help students review. Many students have found PurpleMath to be useful.
The department has made some changes in the course this summer to better serve students. We have been asked to wait until after the teacher meetings on August 26 to make our course policies. So my first-day handouts will be available here (and in Blackboard) by the first day of class.
The math department rule is that students have three semesters to finish the ALEKS work. And this is your third semester.
At the very beginning of the semester, we need to discuss anything about your experiences in the previous two semesters that have been difficult and how to avoid those this semester. And we need to discuss what you will do, as far as math, if you are unable to finish the entire ALEKS pie this semester. I want to help you! The sooner we identify any potential problems and start trying to solve them, the better off you will be in the long run.
Handouts: (I will give you printed copies of all of these on the first class day!)
