This course was last taught in Spring 2018.
I am teaching this course from "Open Educational Resources (OER)" which means that you don't buy a textbook. We use materials from two different free online textbooks. Spring 2018 will be my third semester using these materials in this course.
In this course, students learn about general problem solving, personal finance, and mathematical modeling. We do our mathematics mostly using spreadsheets instead of the symbolic manipulation used in algebra courses.
Spring 2018: The first-day handout is attached below, with 1332-018 in the title. (Two different formats are available to make it easier for everyone to print it.)
The course materials are available in Blackboard in a format provided to ACC by the Lumen Foundation, who is supporting our OER program by making accessible versions of the materials.
Most of the course materials are taken from books available on the web. It is not necessary to print them yourself - not all parts will be needed, and those most needed will be provided as handouts.
They are taken from
David Lippman's Math In Society http://www.opentextbookstore.com/mathinsociety/ (the chapter on Problem Solving)
Parker, Ellinger, and Orlando's Math for Measurement http://www.austincc.edu/mparker/mfmodel/ Topics K, I, J, L, M, N
Follow this link to find the spreadsheets we used in the Finance section of the course.
