In the Fall 2017, this section MATH 1342.016 at the Eastview Campus on TTh morning uses a different text than most of the other sections of this course in Fall 2017.
It is
Statistics: Unlocking the Power of Data, by Lock, Lock, Lock-Morgan, Lock, and Lock. 2nd ed. 2017 Wiley Publishing Company.
It covers the same material as in the other text, but it develops the concepts of inference (confidence intervals and hypothesis tests) from a re-sampling perspective, which is an approach that has been used increasingly for statistics practice for several decades and for statistics education in the last decade. The book has been used with great success for three years in various schools around the US. If you wish to read more about that, see this website, particularly the Overview: http://www.lock5stat.com/
If you wish, contact the MATH 1342 committee at ACC to see why we are using this.
Co-chairs: Mary Parker (mparker@austincc.edu) and Gustavo Cepparo (gcepparo@austincc.edu).
Prerequisite for MATH 1342: TSI-complete in Mathematics. Information: https://sites.google.com/site/mpstat22/
Course Syllabus and first-day handout. It will be similar to this document, which is for Spring 2017: View Download
Course materials:
Information on how to access the online version of the materials for free for 14 days will be provided here about mid-August 2017.
There is a paper (looseleaf) textbook and an online version of it (called WileyPlus), with many resources. You are expected to use WileyPlus. While you can look at the textbook within WileyPlus, most successful students have said that they find it more efficient and comfortable to see the overview of the material and do homework using a paper book much of the time.
Free statistical software in the course.
