About Me

Name: Stephanie Yoon

Site: Monterey Highlands

Grade(s): Kindergarten

Technology I Recommend

I would recommend using iPads and computers. Hooking the iPad and laptop to a projector is a great way to show things to students.

A little about me:

I have been teaching kindergarten for 17 years at Monterey Highlands. I love teaching kindergarten! I have been trying to find different ways to use iPads in my class.

Technology ability: In between proficient and advanced

Lesson

Decomposing Numbers

Technology used: iPads

Subject: Math

Common Core Standard(s):

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.OA.A.3

Decompose numbers less than or equal to 10 into pairs in more than one way, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record each decomposition by a drawing or equation (e.g., 5 = 2 + 3 and 5 = 4 + 1).

The students are working on decomposing number 6. They first use 2 sided counters to show me different ways they can decompose 6 (ex.: 4 red counters and 2 yellow counters). They then can work in partners to think of all the ways to decompose 6. They will use the app "Show Me" on the iPad to show their work. Show Me is an app where they can use drawing tools to show their work. It also has a feature when they can add as many pages as they need. Each page will show one way to decompose 6.

Technology Insight & Tips

Teach the students how to use and navigate Show Me before you do the lesson. They need to know how to draw pictures and change the colors of the drawing tool. They also need to know how to add or get to the next page. The app also has a feature where they can record their voice.
