I integrate chromebooks and student cell phones into my lessons. I use Kahoot, Quizlet, QR codes, and Docsteach.org throughout my units.

A little about me:

I have a BA from CSULA, a Special Education Credential from Azusa Pacific University, and a Masters in Education from Azusa Pacific University. This is my third year of teaching, and first year of teaching at SGHS. I enjoy hiking, traveling, going to Dodger Games, and volunteering for Autism Speaks.

Lesson

Civil War and Reconstruction

Technology used: For this lesson student's were required to download the app QR Reader.

Subject: US History 11th Grade (SDC)

Common Core Standard(s):

U.S History

11.1-4. Examine the effects of the Civil War and Reconstruction and of the industrial revolution, including demographic shifts and the emergence in the late nineteenth century of the United States as a world power.

Common Core Standard:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RH.11-12.7 Integrate and evaluate multiple sources of information presented in diverse formats and media (e.g., visually, quantitatively, as well as in words) in order to address a question or solve a problem.

ELD standards:

SL 11-12.1: Participate in collaborative discussion

P.I.C 1: Exchanging information and ideas with others through oral collaborative discussions on a range of social and academic topics

Using #QRCodes, students will answer multiple questions about the amendments, the effects of the war, and the effects it had on American History. Students will work in their assigned collaborative groups where each student is assigned a role. The leader will scan the #QRcodes and will facilitate the discussion within the group regarding the question. The secretary will compile the group’s ideas on the collaborative graphic organizer. The researcher will look for evidence in the text or in their notes. The presenter will present assigned answers to questions during class discussion.

Post assessment/lesson:

Evaluate student learning from the class discussion, graphic organizer and ability to communicate during the #QRcodes activity.

Post assessment/unit assessment:

Completion of the graphic organizer in the #QRcodes activity will show that students acquired the information needed to answer the essential questions. Students will also be accountable to provide answers to the questions during classroom discussion.

Materials needed for this lesson:

• Teacher generated Graphic Organizer, 1 copy of each to give to the groups

• #QRCodes that will be displayed around the classroom

• One cellphone per group to scan the #QRcodes

Technology Insight & Tips

Students enjoy doing the QR codes activity and they can be used for any subject. Docsteach.org is an awesome tool that can be used in History classes.
