About Me

Name: Sheila Mc Cullough

Site: Repetto

Grade(s): 5th

Technology ability: In between proficient and advanced

A little about me:

I began my teaching career at Emery Park 25 years ago. It was that experience that had me hooked on technology as it was part of a grant which made it a model technology school. I've been with AUSD, teaching 2nd and 5th grade in general education and 2nd - 6th in Special Ed. Recently, I got my master's degree in Ed. Technology at APU.

Among my many favorite websites are TenMarks, Gaggle, net, EdPuzzle or Zaption; iMovie; Schoology or Edmodo, Google Apps, Code.org, IXL, Internet4Classrooms; ReadWorks; ReadWriteThink; BookAdventure; Annenberg Learner Interactive; TypingWeb. iPad apps - Virtual Manipulatives, Singapore Math Bar Model manipulatives; Thinking Blocks.

My Lesson: This lesson will take a week to complete depending on what you want the finished product to look like. It is for 5th grade but can be modified to use at 4th grade level.

Decimal Division Extension Project

1. Place students in groups of 4-5 and assign a Project Manager.

2. Project managers will meet with the teacher and create a data table on Google Docs that they will share with their group.

3. Project managers will present the Scenario to their group members and assign research topics to each.

Scenario:

This year the 5th grade team came across $15,000 of extra money in their account! Now we need your help to decide how to spend it! We want to take your class of 92 students on an end of the year field trip, but we cannot agree on a place to go. Our ideas are Disney World, SeaWorld, Universal Studios, Kennedy Space Center or Busch Gardens.

Now it is up to you to help us make our decision! Choose the park that you would like to go to and research to find the following information: 1) the admission cost for 92 students; 2) the number of buses needed; 3) total cost of buses; 4) cost per student of the buses; 5) cost of food for 97 students; 6) amount of money left over after admission, food, and bus cost; and 7) amount of money per student left over to spend on souvenirs. Be sure to organize your information into a data table so it is easier to present the information to the teachers!

4. Student research to find the cost of tickets, transportation, and food for their assigned destination.

5. Project managers shares the table with group members.

6. Group members add their discovered data to the group table.

7. Once the table is complete, the group decides which destination is their choice.

*If you want to go further with this project, you can have the groups develop a rating system; write equations that produced their final entries.

You can print the table and display them along with written explanations of the process.

Technology I Recommend

TenMarks.com has common core math and SBAC type questions. It grades assignments, provides student support with videos and hints and even allows students to go back and correct missed items. Excellent program.

Code.org is something I recently began to use. It's self-directed and teaches students coding in a fun way. It assesses the students, keeps track of their progress and provides ways for student to use what they've learned to create.

Blogging - Excellent way to get students writing and sharing it with their peers. KidBlogs is a an easy way to get started.

Google Drive and Collaboration. - Use when you assign group projects. Students are so jazzed when they collaborate with peers and have opportunities to learn leadership skills and communication skills.

Technology Insight & Tips

Prepare the students by having them log in to their gmail accounts and create contact groups. Introduce the commenting feature and establish ground rules. Encourage them to use visuals in their data table to illustrate the different destinations.
