Technology I Recommend

Be a jack of all trades with technology. You should expose yourself to a little bit of everything, and eventually you'll find a piece of technology you'll be passionate to know inside out!

A little about me: I have been with AUSD for about 18 years all at Emery Park School.

Technology ability: In between proficient and advanced

Lesson

3rd Grade Measurement GLAD/Observation Charts

Technology used: Chromebooks

Subject: Math/Measurements

Common Core Standard(s):

Solve problems involving measurement and estimation of intervals of time, liquid volumes, and masses of objects.

3.MD.2 Measure and estimate liquid volumes and masses of objects using standard units of grams (g), kilograms (kg), and English Units (oz, lb.), and liters (l).

Starting the new unit on measurement, I decided to utilize one of the GLAD strategies of using observation charts to see what the students knew about the different types of measurement tools. Instead of making big charts with images of different tools, I just made PDF files with images of measurement tools (ie. Observation Chart A had all tools to measure liquids; Observation Chart B had all tools to measure weight; and so forth). The students worked in pairs to discuss what they saw. Then they needed to come up with an observation, a prediction, and a question about what they saw. Then after 5-6 mins. they rotated to another chromebook that had the next observation chart. They repeated this until they saw all the observation charts. Eventually they shared out their observations, predictions, and questions about the observation charts they saw. This was a good way to assess the students to see how much background knowledge they had.

Technology Insight & Tips

Outside of using realia, the kids enjoyed seeing color images on the screen and rotating from computer to computer trying to figure out what each observation chart consisted of.
