About Me

Name: Kimberly Ng

Site: Brightwood

Grade(s): 2nd Grade

Technology ability: Proficient

A little about me:

I currently teach 2nd grade. I am amazed at how much I can raise the expectation bar and I will have students who can reach it. As much as technology changes, I still use a record player to teach my students folk dancing and PE during rainy days. Who doesn’t love a record player?

Lesson

Plant Parts - Why you do, what you do.

Technology Used: iPad with the Aurasma app

Technology I Recommend

I currently don’t have recommendations because everything I implement is something new and exciting to incorporate.

Subject: Science, Writing, Speaking & Listening

Common Core Standard(s):

2-LS2-1: Plan and conduct an investigation to determine if plants need sunlight and water to grow.

2-LS2-2 Develop a simple model based on evidence to represent a proposed object or tool.

ELA/Literacy W.2.7 – Participate in shared research and writing projects.

ELA/Literacy SL.2.5 - Create audio recordings of stories or poems; add drawing or other visual displays to stories or recounts of experiences when appropriate to clarify ideas, thoughts, and feelings.

Science Unit of Study

Activity 1: Students read Science book Chapter 1, lesson 1 and 2, about the different plant parts. Then they used a Tree Map to organize their knowledge about the 6 plant parts (flowers, seed, fruit, roots, stem, and leaves). This took about 4 days.

Activity 2: In small groups of four, students created a poster of a plant and the 6 parts which we learned. This took about 3 days.

Activity 3: Each group then created a script and divided the responsibility of the introduction, 6 plant parts, and conclusion. This took about 3 days, with practicing their parts.

Taking one group at a time, each person was recorded separately using Aurasma to create an aura for each person. Since each poster was made up of 4 students, there were 4 different places on the poster to view each group members’ presentation.

I did the initial recording for the students using Aurasma on the iPad. Each student got to type on the iPad with their name and title of presentation, create their trigger (or focus point) on the poster, and complete the overlay. I had the use of one iPad for 26 students. This was done in 2 days. By the last three groups, I had students who were eager to take the lead and assist the students to creating their product.

While I was recording, the class was working on other assignments. Some recordings you can hear more background noise than others, but it's okay.

Technology Insight & Tips

You don’t have to have an electronic device for every student to use. They can pair up. Start small with a couple of devices and use the technology as an activity or rotation system. Then when you’re comfortable, try to incorporate a few more devices. It takes time to feel comfortable with managing the students.
