November 2017 SCSD Advisory Board Meeting Minutes
I. Introductions – Welcome to new and returning members!
All Members introduced themselves
II. General Updates
Overview of tentative dates for programs at both SCLA and SHS main campus. New programs are being proposed, will need external review.
A. Culinary Programs (SCLA)
Laura Macey discussed Culinary Arts programs:
1. Enrollment is up-almost at max capacity for classes; students are participating from the Main Campus.
2. Demonstrations with Whitsons are scheduled monthly at the Middle Schools. A collaboration for the elementary schools is in the works and will focus on healthy snacks.
3. Continuing partnership with SCCC; 10 students enrolled in Food Sanitation class
B. Business Education Programs (SCLA and SHS
Dan Hepp discussed Business classes (SCLA):
1. Overview of classes offered for Business
2. Classes at SCLA are at capacity and students are making progress
3. Classes at SCLA are working to update the display board located near the Business Room and plan to update it throughout the year.
4. Students are learning to write formal business letters with the hope of reaching out to local companies.
Nicole Peek (SHS)
1. There has been a decline in enrollment in the SHS programs due to students not being able to receive credit through SCCC as a result of staff credentials.
C. CAD Programs (SCLA)
Jim Keough discussed the CAD program:
1. Successful start to the year- students were given t-shirts which they proudly wear on a weekly basis. Thank you to Monograms Plus and Ms. Wolcott for their help with the t-shirts.
2. Mr. Keough has two new, full size classes, to support the CAD program, which will help with the addition of Computer Aided Manufacturing which requires multiple pieces of equipment to support this class.
3. Enrollment is also up in the CAD program with classes at full capacity. There was an increase to ten students in the CAD SCCC course.
4. The January meeting will focus on finishing up the self-study of the CAM program. The April meeting will focus on the External Review of the CAM program.
D. CCNA and IT Essentials Programs (SHS)
Overview of “Networking” and “IT Essentials”
1. There is an expectation that several students will complete the programs this year and Mrs. Keimel and Mr. Keough will assist in helping to the identify the students completing the program.
E. Media Arts CTE Program (SCLA)
Sarah Hubel discussed the Media Arts program.
1. They are in the process of researching a new program and will be taking a trip to HFM Boces to look at their program; Digital Multimedia and Communications
2. This could result in a photography and Video Editing class.
3. Apple Computers would be used for the program.
4. We currently offer: Studio Art, Introduction to Drawing (½ year course) Introduction to Computer Art (½ year course), Computer Art A&B, and Graphic Design.
5. Students working in computer art are currently working on creating and maintaining online portfolios.
F. Student and Parent Portal in Infinite Campus
We are working towards getting all students and parents familiar with and using the portal.
III. Mindfulness in the school and classroom
Jessica Marley gave an overview of Mindfulness at SCLA:
1. Discussed classroom management plans, curriculum and books that are offered this year.
IV. SCLA/Rotary Partnership Clothing ‘store’
A room has been selected
Mark Sheehan spoke about the “store”
1. Discussed the Rotary’s commitment to mentoring and ways they have and can help community members.
2. A local dry cleaner (Hartz) has offered to dry clean all donations.
3. We are in need of someone who can provide alterations for the clothing.
V. Group Activity
Employability Profile
1. We are currently using a document through Google Apps to track students; it is the general profile that identifies soft and 21st century skills.
2. Members broke into groups to go over different aspects of the Employability Profile used and provide feedback.
