Glossary of “Eduspeak” terms and acronyms
NYSED – New York State Education Department
CTE – Career and Technical Education, term used three ways commonly by NYSED. 1. Any class that is Technology, Business, Family and Consumer Sciences, or Agriculture. 2. Approved sequences of classes that are clustered around a discipline or career. 3. A teacher certification meant for people that are experts in their fields who then go back to teach those field.
SCLA – Steinmetz Career and Leadership Academy; the current incarnation of the Steinmetz Educational Facility and the classes and programs at it.
SHS – Schenectady High School; the main campus located at the Plaza and McClellan Street. SCLA is a part of it.
MS – Middle Schools
Education Foundation Gala – Fundraiser held each year to support he Schenectady Education Foundation, a charity that strongly supports all Schenectady Schools. SCLA students have been providing the food and serving for the last few years.
Capital District Construction Career Days – CDCCD. A yearly event sponsored by the New York State Department of Transportation and various trade unions, business, and other government organizations. It moved recently to the Schenectady County Airport and is a hands on field trip that allows the students to actually drive and operated heavy equipment. Was cancelled this year by the organizers.
DOT – Department of Transportation
Junior Achievement – JA. A nationwide organization dedicated to students learning the skills needed to be competitive in the modern world. Locally they are strong supporters of career programs and have sponsored many of our field trips and job shadowing experiences.
BKW – Berne-Knox-Westerlo. A poor rural school district in the Helderberg Mountains of Albany County that we have partnered with for the business luncheon.
SCCC – Schenectady County Community College.
CFM – Career and Financial Management. A class that teaches the basics of economics and entrepreneurship with a focus on careers. It is a NYS requirement for any CTE pathway.
ProStart – National Restaurant Associations Education Foundations curriculum designed to train the future leaders of tomorrow’s foodservice and restaurants. The Culinary Program and Restaurant Management Program use this exam as a certification exam.
UHS – Also known as CHS. University in High School or College in High School. Used to denote high school classes that are also college credit classes through SCCC. These classes are trancripted and free to our students.
ServSafe – A food service curriculum and exam that stresses the importance of safe handling and use of food.
CAD – Computer Aided Design. Technical drawing on the computer. We use AutoCAD at SCLA.
DDP – Drawing and Design for Production. An introductory class in the CAD program that focuses on the design process and documenting it.
CAD/RC – Computer Aided Design/Residential construction. A class that is focused on the building trades and how they are related to CAD.
CAD/MS – Computer Aided Design/Manufacturing Systems. A class that is focused on manufacturing and how it is related to CAD.
CEIP – Career Exploration Internship Program. A class that is focused on students learning about and getting out to the workforce.
CISCO 1-4 – Classes that are offered at the main campus focused on the skills needed for students to understand, build, and administer computer networks. The curriculum and materials are all sponsored by the CISCO Corporation.
IT 1 and 2 – Information Technology Essentials One and Two. CISCO sponsored classes focused on the how computers works. The IT 1 class is focused on the fundamentals of hardware and software. The IT 2 class is focused on more advanced hardware and software.
SPED – Special Education. Commonly used to denote teachers that work with students with special needs.
PPS – Pupil Personnel Services. School support people such as school counselors, social workers, psychologists, behavior specialists, and nurses.
