Fall / Winter 2012

Since 1986, the Philadelphia Writing Project has sponsored an Invitational Summer Institute on Writing and Literacy for K-16 educators in the Philadelphia region. This past summer, the Philadelphia Writing Project sponsored an additional institute for teachers of English language learners.

The institutes engage teachers in reflective inquiries into practice and the processes of teaching and learning. Teachers explore the practice of writing as a way of understanding teaching beliefs, and multiple forms of literacy. The institutes are grounded in the core beliefs that have influenced Philadelphia Writing Project teacher consultants for more than two and a half decades.

The pieces in this issue of the Journal were written by teachers who participated in one of the two summer institutes. Some of the pieces address teaching and learning directly. Others represent teachers' efforts to write in ways that they might expect from their students. All showcase the diversity and creativity that constitute the Philadelphia community.
