Lutheranism

Salvation

· Man is saved by grace alone, through faith alone for Christ’s sake alone, not of works lest any man should boast.

· God’s grace is universal and offered to all men. (Ezek. 33:11; 1Tim. 2:3-4)

· Christ has made full atonement for our sins.

· God’s Grace can only be rejected prior to conversion.

· Man can fall from Grace because of His rejection of God’s word and Savior. Man can lose His salvation. (Genesis 3, Hebrews 6)

· The Scriptures teach that upon faith in Christ man is totally and completely justified before God for Christ’s sake. (Romans 3:21-24) He is a saint!

· Man is also totally and completely a sinner as long as He has breath in his lungs. (Romans 7-8; Galatians 5) He is a sinner.

After conversion man is both 100 % sinner and 100% saint until the flesh is totally put to death by death.

UMC

Salvation

· Because of Man’s free will, man is able to choose His salvation.

· All men have the opportunity to live according to God’s righteousness and attain salvation.

· Christ’s atonement is unlimited but ultimately is not enough for one’s salvation. The believer must strive towards perfection if He is to inherit eternal life.

· God’s grace can be rejected as an act of man’s free will.

· Man can fall from Grace and lose His salvation

· Methodism teaches two distinct forms of Justification: Initial Justification in which Christ’s righteousness is given to a person upon faith, and Final justification in which faith and works together earn righteousness.

Initial Justification Sanctification Final Justification
