Lutheranism

Worship

· Traditional Lutherans are liturgical and the older sanctuaries are equally ornate. It is only here in the United States under the influence of reformed theology and puritan thinking that the liturgy is done away with and sanctuaries have become sterile.

· The liturgy reminds us of how our forefathers worshipped. Within the liturgy are cradled the means of grace: baptism, preaching, and the Eucharist.

· Man doesn’t approach God during worship, but God comes near to man to deliver His gifts of forgiveness of sins and eternal life.

Eastern Orthodoxy

Worship

· The Orthodox are very liturgical. Their sanctuaries quite ornate.

· Pews are typically reserved for the choir. The congregation stands for most of the service. Many orthodox churches have no pews, only folding chairs for the elderly.

· The liturgy is seen as God’s means of lifting man up to the heavens whereby man may partake of the divine nature by receiving the Eucharist.

· Worship therefore is seen as man being raised into the heavens to meet God.
