Lutheranism

Holy Eucharist

· It was instituted by Christ.

· In, with and under the bread and wine are given the true Body and Blood of Christ which was given into death for the forgiveness of sins.

· Forgiveness of sins is given to those who believe, and judgment is given to those who eat and drink yet do not believe. (1 Corinthians 11:27-29)

· The Sacramental Union is brought about by Christ’s own words: “Take eat, this is my body. Take drink, this is my blood.”

· The supper is a confession of faith. (1 Cor. 11:26)

· The supper comforts souls and strengthens the believer’s faith for service.

· Communion is celebrated often.

Those who have not been instructed are not permitted to commune. Communicant must be able to examine himself. (1 Cor. 11:28)

Eastern Orthodoxy

Holy Eucharist

· Holy Eucharist is seen as the Sacrament of Sacraments. All other sacraments lead towards or flow from this sacrament. The Divine service is focused upon the Eucharist.

· Infants are communed immediately following Chrismation.

· The Orthodox do confess the true presence of Christ in the Supper. The Sacramental Union is brought about by the Epiclesis, a prayer for the Holy Spirit to change the elements into body and blood.

· The Eucharist is seen as a sacrifice which is a continuation of the sacrificial death of Christ on the cross. Christ offers the Father His body and blood under the forms of bread and wine.

· Leavened bread is used instead of unleavened. The Orthodox do not believe Christ instituted the Supper in the midst of the Passover

· The Eucharist is celebrated every Sunday and on feast days.

· The Orthodox do not drink from the cup, but practice intinction; that is they dip the bread in the cup and then eat. Individual cups are never used.
