Lutheranism

Penance (Confession)

· Private confession is highly encouraged though not demanded.

· Confession and Absolution are often thought of as a sacrament. “Therefore Baptism, the Lord's Supper, and Absolution, which is the Sacrament of Repentance, are truly Sacraments. For these rites have God's command and the promise of grace, which is peculiar to the New Testament. For when we are baptized, when we eat the Lord's body, when we are absolved, our hearts must be firmly assured that God truly forgives us for Christ's sake.” ( AP XIII)

Confession is necessary for gross public sins prior to reception of the Lord’s Supper lest anyone eat and drink judgement upon themselves. (1 Cor. 11:29)

Eastern Orthodoxy

Penance (Confession)

· It Offers the forgiveness of sins through the absolution of the priest.

Frequency of confession is left up the individual. However, in the event of gross sin, (public) confession is necessary for reception of the Holy Eucharist.
