Lutheranism

God

· There is one God in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father “and the Son.”

· Lutherans follow the Western tradition of the Nicene creed and do confess the procession of the Spirit from the Father and the Son. John 14:26, 16:7; Gal. 4:6; Rom. 8:9 all testify to this double procession.

God alone is worthy of worship and therefore God alone is worthy to receive our prayers. There is one mediator between God and man, the man Jesus Christ. (1 Tim. 2:5)

Eastern Orthodoxy

God

· There is one God in three persons; Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

· Eastern Orthodoxy does not confess that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father “and the Son.” They cite John 15:26-27

· Orthodoxy also says that the West had no authority to alter the Creed outside of an Ecumenical Council. (The 381 Nicene Creed received this addition in 589 AD.)

Orthodoxy also directs prayers to the saints and to icons.
