Maurine C. Barker

Maurine C. Barker, 73, wife of Clarence S. Barker, retired reporter for the Deseret News and Salt Lake Tribune, died June 30, 1982, in the LDS hospital following a stroke and complications.

A daughter of Bernard N. and Maud Driggs Christensen. She was born February 8, 1909 at American Fork. She graduated from Brigham Young University majoring in speech and recreation and taught briefly before her marriage November 14, 1933, in the Salt Lake Temple. She served as counselor in Ward YWMIA Presidencies, as Ward YWMIA President and later as Ward Primary Association President. Taught Square dancing to young people and operated a retail clothing business.

Survivors: husband, two sons, two daughters, Mrs. Dale O. Zabriskie (Miriam), Paul E. Barker, Kaysville; Mrs. Kenneth J. Rice (Bonnie) and David McKay Barker, Salt Lake City; two brothers and a sister, Dr. Paul D. Christensen, Logan; Mrs. Percy M. Horne (Kathryn), Salt Lake City; and Owen D. Christensen, Springville; also 14 grandchildren.

They made their home in Salt Lake City except for five years in Arizona following Mr. Barker’s retirement from the Deseret News where for 20 years he was State Capitol Reporter.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday in the 18th Ward Chapel, 135 A St. Friends may call at the Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, Friday 6-8 p.m. and one hour prior to services at the Ward Chapel. Burial will be in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.

Maurine Barker dies at 73 in S. L.

Maurine C. Barker, 73, wife of Clarence s. Barker, retired reporter for The Deseret News and Salt Lake Tribune, died June 30, 1982 in LDS Hospital following a stroke and complications.

Mrs. Barker graduated from Brigham Young University in speech and recreation. She taught briefly before her marriage Nov. 14, 1933, in the Salt Lake Temple, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

She was a counselor and president in ward YWMIA presidencies for the church and president of the Primary Association in her ward. She taught square dancing to young people and operated a retail clothing business.

She was a member of the Utah Women’s Legislative Council and served as chairman for many years. She was active in other political and civic activities.

The Barkers lived in Salt Lake City for all but five years, when they made their home in Arizona. He was Deseret News state Capitol reporter for 20 years.

Funeral services will be Saturday noon in the 18th ward chapel, 135 A Street. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and one hour before the services at 260 E. South Temple. Burial will be in the Salt Lake City Cemetery. (Obituary on B-11.)
