APPLICATION FOR MEMBERSHIP
Salt Lake City, Feb’y 18, 1905
To the Central Company of the
Society of Daughters of the Utah Pioneers.
I, Margaret C. Sharp
Wife of Joseph Sharp (deceased)
Hereby apply for Membership in the Society by right of descent from
a Thomas Condie who was born in Dunfirmshire, Scot, on 27 Sept 1806
was a citizen of Salt Lake City, Utah and died in Salt Lake City on 9 Nov. 1887
b Helen Sharp Condie who was born in Clackmannan, Scot. On 25 May 1811
was a citizen of Salt Lake City and died in Salt Lake City on 21 Feb’y 1883
[additional lines left blank]
The services of my ancestors in assisting in pioneering Utah were as follows:
Emigrating to and settling in Salt Lake City in 1852. Built
his own wagon to cross the plains (i.e.) my father.
I was myself born in Clackmannan, Scot., and
emigrated the same year, and have been a resident of
Salt Lake City ever since. I was born 19 Nov. 1839.
My husband, Joseph Sharp, was born at Alva [or Aloa?],
Sterlingshire, Scot., 8 July, 1830, and emigrated to Utah
in 1850. He died at Willow Springs (300 miles east of
Salt Lake City) when on his way as captain of a freight
train to Salt Lake City, Utah. In 1858 he carried an
important message from Brigham Young to General
Harney to a point beyond Haw’s [?] Fork, which he
accomplished at the imminent [?] peril [?] of his life.
Together with my parents, I passed through the Grasshopper
war of 1854 and 1855, which brought us near to starvation.
[page 3]
I have in my possession a letter from
Pres. Brigham Young, written in 1863, to my
husband, Joseph Sharp, addressing him a “Captain
Joseph Sharp”, giving him certain instructions
while in the “Carson Valley” freighting trip.
