Clarence Sharp Barker

Clarence S. Barker began his journalism career as a copy boy with the Deseret News in 1928. Following an L.D.S. Mission to South Africa, he joined the Salt Lake Tribune in 1933. He returned to the Deseret News in 1948 and served as church reporter, copy editor, and reporter covering the Salt Lake City-County building. Since 1952 Clarence has logged an enviable record reporting from Capitol Hill.

On April 19, 1971, he was awarded the “Courtesy is Contagious” award from the Utah State Employees Association, the presentation by Governor Rampton being made for the first time to someone not a State employee.

He was born April 1, 1903 in Salt Lake City. His wife is the former Maurine Christensen; they were wed Nov. 14, 1933, in the Salt Lake Temple. Their four children are Miriam, Paul, Lavon and David.

Clarence is a graduate of the former LDS High School and of the University of Utah in English and Education, 1925.
