Margaret Condie Sharp Diary
I, Emily Barker Farrer, transcribed the diary of Margaret Condie Sharp in March of 2007. I wanted to have a typed copy of the diary as near as it was written to preserve the “feel” of Margaret’s book. I will eventually proof read this and create an edited, more readable version.
I obtained a photocopy of the original document, Accn 1884, from the Manuscripts Division of the University of Utah Marriott Library, cost $25.

Notes from significant events or knowledge learned]
[1] Margaret Condie (1839) and Joseph Sharp (1830) had two living children: Joseph C. (1861) and Cecilia (1863).
[2] Items of Joseph in 1875 is likely Margaret’s son, Joseph C, rather than her husband, Joseph.
[3] This is likely land sold by Joseph C Sharp, the son.
[4] John A Sharp (1850) is Adam Sharp’s son, and therefore, Margaret’s nephew.
[5] Frederick Ellis and Cecilia Barker had a son named Frederick George. Margaret may call her son-in-law, Fred, and her grandson, Fredie. She doesn’t differentiate the two of them, nor does she differentiate her husband, Joseph Sharp and their son, Joseph Condie, who is called Joseph C. Sharp.
[6] Possibly a word something like chiffonier, an Americanized version of a French word meaning dresser or bureau.
[7] Margaret Condie Sharp’s Autobiography, Genealogical Surveys of LDS Members, Vol 27, Sa-Sj (Sharp) in Salt Lake City Family History Libray.
[8] This could be San Bernardino Mission near Riverside and Redlands or San Gabriel Mission near Alhambra, California.
[9] Jane Louise Bennett (1867) is the wife of Joseph Condie Sharp, Margaret’s grandson.
[10] Margaret’s daughter, Cecilia, and some of her children.
[11] This is likely Frederick George, son of Fred and Cecilia.
[12] - Joseph C. Sharp attended the private school of Karl G. Maesar in Salt Lake City, and while yet a boy, became an apprentice mechanic for the Utah Central Railroad company, which later was absorbed by the Oregon Short Line. He worked for the company for 20 years, during a large portion of which he was a master mechanic. He was made foreman of all machine shops of the company in 1883. Source: Kip Sharp’s PAF Notes of Joseph C. Sharp. Kip Sharp is a descendant of Joseph Sharp (1830) and his first wife, Janet Condie.
[13] During these years, there was a cholera epidemic in St. Louis when the Sharp and Condie families lived there, as a way station on the way to Utah from Scotland. Identity of this person is unknown.
