CB&H CC History

History

The earliest records show that Coombe Bissett played at Homington Down in 1886, and from the sketchy details it is obvious that the side consisted of "Toffs” and “Workers". Although nothing remains of the ground, in all probability it would have been at the top of Pigeon Hill at Homington, adjacent to the old seven hole golf course. Eventually both clubs folded. and the “Toffs” formed the South Wilts Golf Club at nearby Netherhampton Down, taking with them the cricket club pavilion.

The club was reformed again in 1931, and joined the Salisbury & District League, playing their matches at nearby Tottens, but folded again before the start of the 1934 season. Undaunted, the members reformed again to start the 1938 season, this time playing friendly cricket at the Blandford Road ground.

The second world war quickly intervened, and play was interrupted until the hostilities ceased, but the club were ready for cricket action in time for the 1945 season, moving across the road to the Giants Collar ground where the game continued in the Salisbury & District League until 1974, when they again folded due to the lack of players.

1980 saw the emergence of the new club with the headquarters moved to the present, delightful Shutts Lane venue with panoramic views over the surrounding countryside. With a team of 14-16 year olds and with the assistance of a few old codgers the club has gone from strength to strength. At the start as funds were non-existent an old chicken house was obtained and turned into a pavilion, and with no square as such, fund raising was at the fore of the agenda. With the help of over generous patrons and many fund raising events by the club We are now the owners of a mass of machinery and equipment, and boast the finest batting track in the district, much envied by our visiting teams.

The club has stuck to it's decision to play only good quality friendly cricket, and although competitive on the field of play, they are a friendly bunch and play very much within the spirit of the game, and are excellent company at the Fox & Goose after the game.
