Shrewton

Home 31st July: Won by 46 runs CB 178-7 Shrewton 132ao

Before the match, both sides stood in tribute to the late Alasdair Mc Laren-Reid who died earlier in the week. Known affectionately by all at the club as "The Maj", he was one of our staunchest supporters. He will be remembered and respected for his sense of fun, wit and charm. Until recently, due to his failing health, he would be ever present at our games both at home and away. He always looked forward to our short tours to the west country, and would delight in the after-match parties, being among the first to arrive and the last to leave! If as some say, there is an afterlife, he will again be able to swear lovingly at his beastly dog Max in that, never to be forgotten crystal cut accent.

Perhaps the skipper has a double headed coin, as once again he gave the correct call, & marched out to bat with partner David Shaw. The bearded one duly smashed the first ball for four through the covers & then planted anchor in his true Boycottian style and stayed to see 76 on the board, adding only a further 5 runs for himself. Still the anchorman had done his job! Runs from the middle order, Jeffery 48, Newman 19 & a cheerful 27 from Jon Burton

at the end saw the home side to tea with a reasonable 178-7.

Jean Hodge with daughter Di did the honours at tea, with Bernie (Mrs Paul Hodge) providing two excellent cakes! Great stuff all home made & nothing bought!

In reply the visitors raced to 59 in the first 8 overs with Gilliott 45 being very severe on the Coombe attack. But it was the bearded one again, sporting new gloves & snapping 3 good catches behind that did the damage! Pounell with a hard hitting 28 proving the resistance at the end.

A young Shrewton keeper waits for one!

Milkie watches one!

Shrewton' Pounall gives it a biff!

So does Matt!

All action here!

Whoops! First ball from AJ
