Statement of purpose

Work and study at the same time with this degree apprenticeship. Two exciting new flexible apprenticeship routes to become a registered nurse with the NMC in adult, mental health or child fields are now being offered at the University of York, via a full-time 3 year and 3 month route and a shortened full-time 21 month accelerated route, for those with a current nursing associate qualification. This programme will equip you with the necessary skills to develop your career in nursing and progress into advanced clinical roles, leadership, research or education through further study within Health Sciences.


You will be employed on a supernumerary basis as a trainee apprentice. During the programme you will experience a wide variety of placement opportunities and practice simulation opportunities supported by experienced practice supervisors. Expert clinical teaching staff will guide and support you through the programme, implementing a range of teaching methods, to help you to focus in on particular issues for your patients and families; meet patient-centred holistic care needs of individuals and enable you to demonstrate a greater depth of knowledge and the advanced skills required to meet the specific care needs of people in your chosen fields of nursing practice. 


Adult Field - gain expert knowledge and skills to enable you to nurse adults across a wide age range and across a range of acute and community settings delivering expert and safe clinical care. 


Mental Health Field - be supported by an expert team to demonstrate and develop your interpersonal skills and clinical knowledge enabling you to work collaboratively with people experiencing mental ill health; in a range of settings including hospital, community and forensic placements. 


Child Field - learn in an innovative environment supported by experienced tutors and practitioners to provide committed, compassionate and professional care for children and young people and their families. 


Your individual development will be supported by 12 weekly tripartite meetings with your academic assessor/ personal supervisor and practice assessor. Within this process you will be supported to reflect and evidence your progress in relation to the NMC proficiencies, individual career goals and study skills. 


Additionally, as a University of York student, you will be provided with access to excellent library and sports facilities, and presented with an array of club and society opportunities to enrich your studies.
