Skills acquisition and development through the programme

Literacy, numeracy, digital skills and study skills are mapped across the programme. Your assessments are designed to scaffold and build your skills through each stage of the programme and across theory and practice learning. For example in ‘Psychosocial’ module 1 you will participate in small group presentations to learn to orate and gain confidence in presenting your ideas. This will also feed into your assessments in practice in which you will undertake episodes of care and be asked to work with your assessor and express the different elements of care you give to patients. In Bio 1 you will be summatively assessed in an 1.5 hour exam assessed by multiple choice questions. In Stage 3 you are assessed in an OSCE exam in which you demonstrate your assessment skills related to your field of practice.

In addition to the skills development in each module you will be directed by the programme team to practise numeracy skills on the NCFE platform building your skills in different areas; shapes and space, handling information and data, using numbers and the number system. Your personal supervisor will work with you to advise you on how to build upon your skills further.

You will also undertake a summative health numeracy assessment at the end of Stage 3 of the programme, using the SafeMedicate platform. You must pass this summative assessment with a score of 100%. In order to build your skills and knowledge you will undertake a formative health numeracy assessment opportunity at the end of Stage 1 in the KANP 2 module. At this formative attempt you will aim to achieve a score of 80%. At the end of Stage 2 you will undertake a second formative health numeracy assessment and aim to achieve a score of 90%. At the end of Stage 3 in KANP 6 you will sit your summative health numeracy assessment and must achieve 100%. In order to ensure you are progressing the results of formative assessments will be passed from the KANP Module Leads to the personal supervisors so that your personal supervisor can monitor progress and suggest ways to enhance and improve. There will be two attempts to pass the health numeracy assessment unless you have mitigation in place.

This focuses upon medication calculations. In each Stage of your programme you will participate in formative assessment and, at the end of Stage 3, you will undertake a summative assessment on the SafeMedicate platform. Your personal supervisor will discuss the formative results with you to help guide you towards improvements throughout the programme. You must pass the formative assessment with 100% as this is an NMC requirement. You have two attempts to pass this assessment.
