What constitutes a 'series' when it comes to ceramics?
1 ¾ x 4 ¼ inches, Stoneware
In ceramics, a series is a set of a creation that relates to each other, whether that be through pattern, color, or shape. I made my bowls all the same shape, careful when throwing to make the same shapes with my hands and apply the same pressure in the same places on each bowl. I think they turned out pretty similar, with slightly different sizes or feet. When carving, I decided I liked the idea of a sun in the middle, and I did one in each. Then, to make it more interesting, I added little lines all around the bottom of each bowl, like rays of the sun. I was careful to space them out evenly and do the same amount on each bowl. I also used the same colors on each with the same amount of layers and placement.
I learned how to control the clay on the wheel better. It was very difficult to create four bowls that were almost identical. I have a lot of respect now for the people who create sets like that for a living. It takes a lot of skill and hard work to create pieces like that. I also learned about cone ⅚ glazes and how they interact with each other. I think they are beautiful and very interesting to work with as well as look at. I also learned how to trim better from this assignment. It’s very staitsying once you get the hang of it, and even though I definitely messed up a few times, my trimming skills grew a lot.
