Stoneware Clay
Thrown jar form, glazing with regular and underglaze

For my form, I chose to throw because of the jar form I desired. I’m very happy with the results. It’s a very nice form to hold and it was the first time I only needed to throw once. I chose to use the orchid as my flower because it was the flower we would get my Nana every year for Christmas. I wanted to show a bit of her in this piece, so I used darker blue because that was her favorite color. Almost all of her clothes were blue, and her favorite blanket was blue. I don’t completely remember why I added the little hearts at the base of each orchid plant, but it probably had something to do with my love for my grandma.
This piece was the first piece with my revised inquiry with the miaolica style. It didn’t come out looking beautiful and it smudged, but I like that I’m trying a new style and evolving. I think I was focusing too much on the lines that would define the flowers and not enough on the flowers themselves. I want to use more varying colors next time and I want to be much more careful with my lines.
Moving forward, I am going to try to use more color. I also want to connect the flower I choose to my piece even more by having it influence the form of my piece. I’m already working on my next piece, and I’ve done this with the overall shape of it. When I glaze it, I am going to try to get all of the colors on first before I worry about the lines. I want to vary the coloring and be careful with my lines.
