When I started my sustained investigation, I was very unsure of the topic I wanted to explore. My first few pieces were rocky and I didn’t love them, but once I focused enough I started being able to make work I was very proud of and loved. My favorites are the hydrangea vase, the lupine vase, and the wildflower torso. I feel like those represent what I love to do in ceramics well. I love creating pieces that use parts of nature that I find beautiful. I love the flowers I used and the ideas behind each piece. Overall, I’m the most proud of how this class pushed my critical thinking and experimental/revision skills.
When making this body of work, I’ve had to put a lot more thought and intention into each piece than I’ve ever had to before. It was hard sometimes to sort through ideas and always come back to the same question. I often wanted to try things that didn’t fit into my investigation but I had to keep myself on track. This has led me to have more intentionality with my work and put more thought into all of my projects.
