Purpose:
Students will create a Photo Collage with multiple viewpoints of a subject into a single image, similar to David Hockney's "joiners."
Through this assignment, I learned how the placement of each photo is vital while creating. Every photo incorporated plays a role in bringing the entire photomontage together. You want to have a formatted pattern or theme when bringing this photo cubism project to life. For me, I focused on committing to perspective and leading lines. My photomontage turns with the countertop to reflect the real life layout of the room. Overlapping can be approached in many different ways, so there are various outcomes as a result. I noticed while creating an abstract shape with overlapping, that it provides the viewer with a new perspective of your subject(s) in each photo. None of the photos need to be perfectly aligned because there’s no way to do cubism wrong. While using a strategy like overlapping with your photos, you want to make sure they blend well. Thus, lighting would also be important when it comes to having every photo fit and not stand out. I also realized how the positioning of ourselves while taking the 40 photos is crucial since it determines how our final product will come out. If we don’t stay in the same location and stick with the 4x10 shooting process, our photos will not look in order or be a reasonable distance from each other.
