Purpose:
To understand how a line can be used to create a three-dimensional form
To create a sculpture that considers balance and repetition, variety and emphasis
To consider where artists find their inspiration
My sculpture has many different sizes of loops and designs, but the emphasis is the section of paper that has been glued on. Since this particular area of space is the only part with paper, it catches your attention and stands out from the whole sculpture. I chose this for my emphasis because I wanted a focal point in my model to be different from all the lines you see. While you can create extraordinary shapes and patterns with lines, I wanted a different material that people would notice when seeing my sculpture.
This assignment showed me that anything can be art with creativity and determination. When we were first given strips of reed, I never would’ve thought it could become such a distinct 3D design. I thought the process of turning lines into complex models was a fun experience. Being 3D, every direction you look at the sculpture you’ll see something different or unique. Especially if there’s an emphasis, like a piece of paper to give you something to focus on, or a distinctive design to make the sculpture detectable.
