Purpose:
To determine where values change when light moves over an uneven surface by using a range of values to paint the different values in a realistic, monochromatic self-portrait;
To effectively communicate an image that looks like you through careful examination of the values and structure of your face.
Reflection:
When painting facial features it’s important to identify the different shades prominent in the image. Understanding the different values of each feature due to the lighting is crucial or else the result of your painting will not be realistic. Another important factor that is necessary is to make sure there is not too much contrast between each shade or else it will appear unnatural and stick out. For instance, when painting my nose, I focused on making the shape look lifelike with the rest of my face using the different shades, especially when it came to the nostrils and making it appear 3D.
