Object: Mouse
Purpose:
1.To understand and demonstrate how to make a good movie poster;
2. To visually capture people’s attention through a movie poster;
3.To understand how designers create suspense and a particular mood in a poster design.
To add suspense and mood to my everyday object, I thought of my object in two different ways. In a lot of history, mice were a bad omen and meant death and sickness, so I chose a horror movie for my first genre. I added different colors and objects to reflect the horror genre. For my second poster, I thought of mice in a different way. In some cultures, mice were seen as intelligent and whimsical creatures, so for my second genre I chose fantasy. I added a dreamy and fairytale-like atmosphere to add on to that.
For my first genre, the horror movie, I decided to expand on how mice were seen as bad omens in a lot of time periods. In my horror movie, the mouse is the antagonist. To show this, I added shocking colors like red and black and added symbols that we associate with death, like a scythe. For my second genre, I chose fantasy. I based my movie off of an old medieval belief that our souls escape our bodies as mice if we sleep with our mouths open. I decided to get more creative with this and make my own story of an unhappy king who escapes a mouse and tries to leave his kingdom. I used a big full moon to show transformation, and the castle to add to the backstory of the mouse, as well as a small consellation of a crown in the sky.
