Purpose: Make a slab mug that demonstrates connecting slabs securely, creating and attaching a handle, and illustrates a personal narrative. This should be done through the handle, textures, added-on features and/or glazing.
My mug tells the story of when I visited New Zealand in 2022 with my family. We traveled on both the north and south island. When traveling, we encountered lots of hills and even twistier roads on those hills. Every drive felt like I was on a roller coaster. I wanted to show that in my mug, so I carved the background to make the hills the focal point. I also chose a combination of glazes which I thought showed the lush green color. In New Zealand, I also saw LOTS of sheep. This makes sense because there are 5 sheep for every person in New Zealand, so I added little doodles of sheep along the roads. When I was there, It was winter. The weather was still nice, but the skies were not always blue. I chose speckled blue gray to show the color of the sky and I think it reflected it nicely.
If I was going to change my mug so it would tell the story more, I would have added some writing. I think that my scenery shows New Zealand well, but I didn’t specify where it was. I saw a lot of hills like these in Auckland, so maybe I could have added a small title or something similar to that.
