Our generous Brookside Cardinals showed up for the second annual candy swap in a BIG way! Over four days of collection, students turned in a combined 199.3 pounds of candy! We were able to donate to the patients, families, and staff members of the Valley Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House at Westchester Medical Center. Thank you so much to our students and their families for another great year. The candy monster looks forward to seeing everyone next Halloween!
As we enter cold and flu season, please keep in mind our district guidelines for when a student should be kept home. In accordance with NJ DOH guidance, students are too sick for school when they...
Have a fever at or above 100.0° F. Students with fevers must remain home until they are fever-free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication, and until the next full school day (ie, if a student is sent home from school with a fever on Monday morning and their last fever is Monday at lunch, they can return to school on Wednesday).
Are experiencing vomiting or diarrhea. Like with fevers, students must remain home until these symptoms have resolved for 24 hours without medication and until the next full school day. If your child is experiencing vomiting or diarrhea due to a non-communicable cause (medication side effect, GERD, food intolerance, etc.) please call me so we can discuss!
Are newly started on antibiotics except for diagnoses of isolated ear infection. Students may return to school once they have been on antibiotics for 24 hours.
Are coughing, sneezing, or have a runny nose or sore throat significant enough that it will prevent them from participating normally in class.
Have a skin rash of unknown origin, especially rashes which are weeping, crusting, or have open sores. Many childhood rashes are non-communicable and no reason to stay home from school, but we do need students to be cleared by a healthcare provider with unknown rashes before coming to school to help maintain the safety for all students and staff.
We know this time of year is very tough for ongoing illnesses and no one wants our students missing any more time in school than is absolutely necessary. Thank you in advance for your help as we all work together to keep our Cardinals healthy this winter!
We've cooled down for fall (for real, this time? I think?) but outdoor recess will continue for as long as possible before it gets too cold this winter. Please remind your children to bring layers to school, and consider adding hats and gloves as temperatures continue to drop. While I do have some spare clothes for spills and accidents in the health office, I have very little for warmer layers for students who are cold and no gloves/hats/scarves at all.
