Place-Based Learning

“This Place-Based Education approach can serve as a framework to connect learning models, increase the power of our educational system and serve as the foundation for a thriving democracy.” - Nate McClennen

What is placed-based learning?

  • Place-based learning is emerging academics into the environment and learning space in the world around you. These projects help students connect learning with their communities. The goal of PBL increases students engagement, improving their academic outcomes, impacting communities and promoting understanding of the world around us.

Why is it important?

  • Place-based learning is important because it empowers students to learn about the world that is happening around them. It allows for students to help determine what they want to learn about the things around them. For example, learning about the recycling/ trash services in town, the bodies of water in town, the special landmarks, electricity, water systems and so many other endless options. These projects can be differentiated towards students strengths and weakness allowing them to bring prior knowledge and learn from their classmates. These projects also allow educators to use the MA standards to help meet the lessons objectives and learning outcomes.

  • These projects are based around the learners communities in the classroom.
