History of GCI

Galt Collegiate Institute has a long history going all the way back to 1852! As you see today our school has come a long way since being an only boys school as the headmaster didn't believe in girls attending his school. When headmaster Tassie left, (along with half the staff) due to differences in opinion regarding meeting Provincial standards, girls were welcome into our school.

Our school wasn’t always this big. As time went on we upgraded by increasing the size of the cafeteria, gyms, and built our Tassie hall along with many more classrooms for a larger capacity of students!

GCI is one of the oldest continually operating high schools in the province of Ontario, and celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2002. The 175th anniversary is sure to be another big year!
