Kia ora, e te whānau,
We hope this newsletter finds you well as we enter the winter months.
We would like to take a moment to express our gratitude to our incredible team of teachers for their hard work and commitment during a busy term. They have been hard at work completing assessments and writing mid-year reports. Thank you, teachers, for your amazing dedication!
Relieving Teachers
As always at this time of the year there are innumerable viruses and illnesses in our community affecting our tamariki and our kaiako alike. At WPS we are committed to employing relievers who are experienced, New Zealand trained and familiar with the New Zealand Curriculum. The strain on the teaching profession at the moment means we may not always be able to book a reliever and our class/es may need to be split - this is not a decision we make lightly or easily but is a last resort solution for that day. Many of our relievers are well known by our tamariki and have had a relationship with our kura over many years. We thank them for their ongoing support in coming in and ‘picking up the reins’ when we have a class teacher away.
Update on Industrial Action
As you will have seen, the primary teacher strike was called off on Sunday as we were presented a fourth offer. Paid Union Meetings were held in place of a strike on Wednesday afternoon. We would like to thank our NZEI members here at WPS who agreed to hold the meeting at lunchtime to minimise disruption and avoid closing school early. We continue to fight for better conditions to ensure the best possible outcomes for our tamariki and that high-quality teachers are attracted to the profession. We will find out if the fourth offer has been accepted next week.
Learning Conversations
On the last Thursday of the term (Thursday 29 June) we will having Learning Conversations with you and your child. You will be able to book a slot with your child's teacher where you can discuss their learning this year. It is important that your child is present for these conversations. More information about booking will be sent home in the coming weeks. Note that while the school is open for Learning Conversations, teachers will be busy with bookings all day. You will need to make childcare arrangements for the day as your child will only be at school for their learning conversation.
Mud, mud, mud!
As we move into the cooler months, we kindly remind all parents to ensure that their children come prepared with a change of clothes, particularly on days when the fields may be muddy. Our little explorers love to engage in outdoor activities, and having spare clothes handy will ensure they can enjoy their time to the fullest without any worries.
Haere mai Caroline
We welcomed a new teacher for Room 15 at the beginning of Term 2 Caroline, who will be joining our team in Room 15. Caroline brings a wealth of experience and a passion for education. She has been part of the WPS community for many years and we are thrilled to have her join us as a teacher.
Haere rā Alison
On a bittersweet note, we will be saying farewell to Alison at the end of this term. Alison has been an exceptional teacher and an integral part of our school community. Her dedication and passion for teaching have made a lasting impact on our students, and she will be greatly missed. We wish her all the best as she pursues her passion for teaching children with additional needs.
Kia piki te ora Nardz
Lastly, we continue to miss and support our Principal, Nardz with her recovery following vascular surgery and look forward to her return when she has fully recovered.
Ngā mihi nui,
Nick & Karen
