Paengawhāwhā 2024
April Newsletter

Kia Ora koutou katoa,

I hope this message finds you in good health and high spirits as we approach the end of a successful Term 1.

The start to the school year has been a settled  one with students actively  engaged with their classroom learning and extra curricular activities.  We continue to remain focused on strengthening student progress and achievement as well as strengthening Hau Ora and connections to Te Ao Māori. This term our teachers and the Senior leadership team have been engaged in Literacy Professional Development - through Writers Toolbox and Structured Literacy workshops. We are looking forward to reporting progress at mid year and are confident that you will see growth in your child's development across the curriculum.

Next term our inquiry is centred within the Māori model of health - Te Whare Tapa Whā. We have started to plan our inquiry to reflect the Human Body, with particular focus on Taha Tinana (physical health) and Taha Hinengaro (mental health).

This week we begun our sad farewells to Titirangi Kindy, who have been onsite for the past year, due to the Auckland Floods at the beginning of 2023. Our staff and tamariki have formed strong friendships and relationships with the kindy and we will miss them immensely! We wish them all the very best for their new adventures and look forward to keeping in regular contact. If your child would like to leave a message for the kindy they can so on the kindy fence from next week.

I would like to extend a special thank you to our PTA for their hard work and organisation of our latest fundraising event. The Quiz Night was a huge success and enjoyed immensely by everyone who participated! Thank you for supporting the school as we raise funds for a new developmental junior playground. Thank you to all our parent volunteers who turn up to help with sausage sizzle each fortnight and ice-block sales - we are truly grateful.

I wish everyone a safe and enjoyable term break and look forward to seeing you back in Term 2.

Ngā mihi,

Nardz Stephenson
Principal

Safety Message for our Community

Keeping our young people safe out in the community is always on our minds and there have been a few really concerning incidents in our wider community over the past few weeks.

At this time of the year, with daylight savings ending, it’s good to remind our young people about staying safe. The safety messages below are from the NZ Police. While we reinforce these messages at all the schools across our Kōtuitui Kahui Ako, they also provide a really good starting point for a conversation at home, when you think about the different activities or events that happen across the week in your household.

NZ Police safety messages for students include:

Ring 111 immediately if you are concerned for your safety or think someone is following you.

Haere rā Titirangi Kindergarten

At the end of the term we farewell the wonderful children, staff and whanau of Titirangi Kindergarten who have been operating out of rooms 19 and 20 since the floods last year.

We wish them all the best. They will be missed!

Lost Property

The lost property is now located outside the Rainbow Room (at the top of the ramp)

There are a number of items left over from the sleepover. Please see the pics below.

Any items leftover at the end of the term will be donated to the Hospice Shop.

A Message from the Board

Tēnā koutou e te whānau o te Kura o Woodlands Park,

The Board is pleased to announce that Michelle Hutton was elected as the new presiding member at our March meeting. Michelle brings a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to the role of governance at Woodlands Park School.

We'd also like to take this opportunity to extend a huge thank you to Peter Lehmann for the past four years of dedicated service as a board member and our previous Presiding Member. Pete has worked closely alongside Nardz our Principal as well as with staff. His contributions have been invaluable, and in particular, we acknowledge the support given throughout the multiple and prolonged lockdowns throughout Covid.

In other news, the governance page on the school website has recently had a refresh. This page provides easy access to essential governance information, including;

Dates for future board meetings can be found on the school calendar.

We look forward to continuing to support our kura, kaimahi, and ākonga as they build upon the successful start to the year. Together, we will continue to nurture a year filled with growth, learning, and achievement.

Nā mātou noa nā,

Bonita, Frazer, Karen, Michelle, Nardz, mātou ko Pete

Thank you WPS PTA!

A huge thank you goes out to the PTA for organizing such a fantastic quiz night! The well-crafted questions kept everyone on their toes, but the night was filled with laughter and friendly competition.  More importantly, the event brought the school community together, fostering a sense of connection between parents, teachers, and students. Thank you for all the hard work by our PTA.
