Term 3 | Week 3 | 2022
Kia Ora e te whanau,
We have hit the ground running this term and there is a great vibe throughout our classes with learning and engagement. Our inquiry so far has sparked wonderings which will be investigated throughout the term and action plans which align to our students’ findings. Our Whanau Kowhai are exploring their commitment to the whenua ‘land’ through the lense of ‘When Papatuanuku thrives, we thrive.’ They are learning about the Woodlands Park School Care Code through our values, in particular Kaitiakitanga (as guardians of our beautiful environment which includes our trees, plants, people, buildings as well as birds and bugs)! Room 4 have collected little soy sauce containers in our playground and after researching that these would take 400 years to break down in landfill, are now ready to take action to stop these coming into our school - they are seeking alternative ways to enjoy soy sauce on their sushi :). They are also looking forward to a trip to the refuse station soon!
Whanau Pohutukawa are inquiring about ‘No place like home’; and learning how to uncover how they can replicate the nutrient cycle when dealing with food waste at home and at school. They will be visiting Arataki soon and take part in a nature trail experience. They will look at native birds, invertebrates, adaption, plant identification, traditional use of the forest, the legacy of logging, stratification, forest succession and a lot more!
Whanau Harakeke are inquiring into their connection with the land to support and enhance their wellbeing as well as understanding that lots of people doing small things can contribute significantly to looking after our environment.
Book week is is in full swing as we celebrate our love of books and authors. We have guest readers, authors and our annual character parade dress up day this Friday! Kate has been very busy in the library with book sales and a huge thank you to our parent volunteers who have been helping in this space!
We have been in partnership with ERO (Education Review Office) since 2020 and were part of the national survey response research that was published late 2020 following lock downs. We have continued our journey under New Zealand’s new review model - Te Ara Huarau. This model works to achieve equity and excellence by engaging culturally and contextually responsive, participatory and collaborative evaluation for improvement; and working and learning together to evaluate, build evaluation capacity and support in continuous improvement in outcomes for all learners.
We have been analysing our mid-year assessment results (from mid year last year where applicable and also progress data from term 1) across the school. We are tracking extremely well with 99% of students in Whanau Kowhai making progress in Reading, Writing and Maths and Whanau Pohutukawa and Harakeke also making accelerated progress in these areas. Please remember that if you have questions or concerns about your child’s progress please do make contact with your child’s teacher.
Just a reminder that this coming Monday is a Teacher Only Day with the next day scheduled for the 12 September. These days are allocated to support teacher work load/Professional development/assessment (as per the Primary Teachers Collective Agreement - The Accord). There will be no further teacher only days this year.
Have an awesome week!
Ngā mihi,
Nardz Stephenson

Our school has a community commercial compost bin situated in the hall car park. Anyone in the local community is welcome to use the bin; it is not just for families at Woodlands Park School. It is not meant to replace home composting for those that do it, but is useful for food scraps that aren’t so great for home compost, eg meat or dairy (any food scraps are fine to go into the community bin), and also for compostable packaging, which usually can’t break down in home compost bins.
Over the past year, the bin was funded thanks to a grant from the Waitakere Ranges Local Board. This has now come to an end, and we are relying on donations to keep the service going, until more funding is hopefully sourced. The bin costs around $15/week, but any donations are gratefully received. Thank you
You can make a donation through Kindo.

COVID-19 will still be in the community this winter so stay alert - even if you’ve had it before.
Remember these five important tips from Auckland Regional Public Health Service:
Be vaccinated. Vaccination is the best protection against getting very sick from COVID-19. Everyone aged 5 or over can get free COVID-19 vaccinations. It doesn’t matter what your visa or citizenship status is.
Keep up healthy habits: Healthy habits can protect you from lots of winter illnesses - not just COVID-19. They include washing and drying your hands well and often, wearing a mask (especially inside), and coughing/sneezing into a tissue or your elbow – not your hands.
Be alert for symptoms: If you or anyone in your household has any cold or flu-like symptoms, stay at home and free-call Healthline: 0800 358 5453. They will tell you what to do, including how to get a test. Healthline is available 24/7, with interpreters available. In an emergency (for example if someone is having difficulty breathing), immediately dial 111 for an ambulance. COVID-related medical care is free.
Stay home if you live with someone with COVID-19: Everyone living in a household with someone who has COVID-19 needs to isolate for seven days – not just the person with COVID. Please do not send your child in if they live with someone who has COVID-19, even if they are well.
Check: is your whānau up-to-date? Now’s a good time to check that your whānau is protected against other diseases like measles, mumps, rubella and pertussis (whooping cough). With New Zealand’s borders re-opening, there’s a greater risk of serious diseases like measles arriving here. Talk to your doctor, or check your own health records (such as your Plunket or Well Child/Tamariki Ora book) to see if everyone’s up-to-date with their immunisations.
