Term 1 | Week 11 | 2022
Rātū 12 o Paenga-whāwhā 2022
Kia Ora e te whanau!
A huge thank you to all of our students and families for the awesome return to the 2022 year, what a stunning term! We are all so proud of our students and their ability to settle back into school so effortlessly and with our school values evident in the way that they move around our school.
Term 2 is set to be an exciting term of learning as we continue to strengthen student progress and achievement across the curriculum, strengthen our wellbeing through Hauora and strengthen our connection with Te Ao Maaori. Our teachers are currently planning to take our students on a journey of migration through Inquiry next term. Understanding the history of Aotearoa and how it has shaped our current lives is now part of our New Zealand Curriculum and we are proud to be part of a culture of life- long learning where we all benefit from enriching our perspectives and knowledge of our local area and that of Aotearoa.
This week we farewell Gillian Appleby who has been teaching R15, we wish her all the very best for her future endeavours. We welcome Ms Tori Engle who will teach R15 for the remainder of 2022. We also welcome (known to many of you already), Mrs Amanda Chapman and Mrs Kirsty Lonsdale who will open a new Year 1 class (new entrants) as our roll increases throughout term 2.
To all of our families who have been through the experience of Covid in your homes, I hope you have recovered well and have come out the other side. Our students appear to have been resilient in this, however, we continue to monitor and support our students returning to ensure they are not experiencing any long covid symptoms - if you have any doubts about your child’s recovery please do not hesitate to let your child’s teacher know.
We have had a number of staff experience covid in their homes this term and we continue to support their recovery with their hauora as a priority.
Finally I would like to thank all of the staff for their hard work and commitment to the growth and progress of our students. There has been a considerable amount of strategic planning to take us through from 2022 to 2024 and we look forward to sharing our strategic plan with you next term. As well as thanking the board for their continual support I would like to acknowledge my senior leadership team who have worked tirelessly throughout the term, not just the day to day running of the school but the additional administration required for reporting to the Ministry around covid related data etc. The increased amount of paperwork and meetings required through the ministry has been demanding and they have done an exceptional job of ‘rolling with all of the punches!’
With the Easter break approaching to conclude our 11 week term, I wish everyone a safe, happy and restful break. If you are Christian and are celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ this weekend, may your celebration be blessed with peace and comfort.
Thank you as always for your continued support of our school,
Ngaa Mihi,
Nardz Stephenson
Principal

The internet has changed the way we work, rest and play. Given the current environment which is increasingly reliant on students connecting, interacting and learning using online spaces and digital devices, it’s important families and whanau feel confident providing support and guidance.
Here are Netsafe’s top tips for parents wanting to manage how much time their children spend online:
Understand what they’re doing: Not all time spent online is created equal. Talk to your children about what they are using digital technology for so you have a better understanding of how they are spending their time.
Help them to self-manage screentime: Children need to start managing how long they spend online themselves and so talk to them about how they are using the online space and things they can do to find a balance between being online and offline.
Set boundaries: Talk about expectations and set clear boundaries, just like all parents do with bedtimes and chores. Set limits together and think about how you can model those screentime expectations. You can also look into using parental controls or scheduling or restricting access via the router.
Technological solutions: Internet content filtering tools are important tools and play a role in online safety and often include features or settings which allow time online to be limited. Many platforms also offer options which include time online trackers which help children understand how much time they are spending online and what activities they spend the most time engaging in.
Look out for changes: If your child’s technology use is affecting their ability to take part in normal activities (such as sleeping, engaging offline or participating in other hobbies) or has changed their behaviour then it’s important to discuss and put in place supports for managing time. This could include restricting where they can use their device, for example not allowing it in their bedroom at night which can prevent sleep.

Lost property will be put out on the fence this Friday and each day next week for a final chance to locate lost clothing. Any clothing still remaining will be donated to the Salvation Army.
Term 2 will see us back on TUESDAYS pumping out some very cool moves to some very cool music and creating very amazing dancers! Your child brings their Lunch to the Hall and after a short snack they get a fun filled Lunchtime
session dancing with their friends and making new friendships too.
We take the pressure out of trying to get your child to after school dance classes for just $135 per term and you get to enjoy your afternoons stress free!
To enrol go to our website www.rhythmnsteps.co.nz and fill in the online enrolment form. The school office does not deal with any part of the enrolment process for these classes.
We can not wait to see your children back doing what that love and in the safety of their school environment.
Come and join the revolutionary self-confidence programme - Marrzipan! We run awesome classes, which focus on key life skills and public speaking ability. We play fun engaging games and perform at the end of term once to parents and once to the school. All scripts are original, engaging, educational and HILARIOUS. We will be running Marrzipan class at 8:00 am in the library on Tuesdays.
