A beautiful day out sailing at French Bay
Congratulations to the race winner Megan Schussler!
We would like to welcome 2 children who have recently started at Woodlands Park School, Summer and Chloe. You might see them around school with their teacher aides Anna and Marnie. If you see them in the playground, say hello to them, give them a big smile and make them feel welcome.
Summer started at WPS the beginning of Term 4. She has Angelman syndrome. Angelman syndrome is caused by a genetic mutation on chromosome 15. The name of this gene is UBE3A. Normally, people inherit one copy of the gene from each parent, and both copies become active in many areas in the body.
Symptoms include lack of crawling or babbling, minimal speech and frequent smiling and laughter. Inability to walk, move or balance well (ataxia) is also a symptom.
Summer is lucky enough to be able to do most of these things however she is non verbal. She can communicate generally with hand motions and pointing. She says hello by 'high fives' and you may have seen her big, beautiful smile.
Chloé is a 5 year old with a little something different about her - she has Down Syndrome. We are all made up of millions of cells and for most of us, these cells have 23 pairs of chromosomes (thread-like structures within the cells that contain the genetic information that make us unique). We get one set of chromosomes from our mum and one from our dad. In Chloé's case something unusual happened when she was just a tiny baby and instead of a pair of chromosome 21 she has 3 copies of it. This affects her in a few ways - she can take a bit longer to learn things and it can be tough for her to keep up with her friends out on the playground. Speaking clearly is also a bit difficult for her but she is working very hard on it! In most ways she's just like any other 5 year old. She loves to play with her friends, watch tv, read, draw and swim. She doesn't like to eat her vegetables! :) She has really enjoyed starting big school and we look forward to the adventures ahead.

Played against Summerland Primary- Summerland Steel on Thursday 19th November. Another big win for our last game of the season: 17-2
Keas
'A disappointing end to the long netball season for WPS Keas. Despite two lock down interruptions, the team stuck together and tied on points for the top spot on the league losing only due to the number of hoops scored. Their fierce reputation meant that their final opponents forfeited the last game but never one to miss the opportunity to play an impromptu, fast paced game was organised :
Keas v Keas' parents.
A well fought game with hoops scored at both ends but the parents stealing victory perhaps due to height advantage! A big thank you to all involved especially Damon and Jade.
Player of the day: Jamie P (Danilee's mum) and all the Keas
We need newspaper for our Year 5 team-building activities next week. If you have any old newspapers please drop them off at Room 20.
