This week, the P5B students worked with a new vocabulary list, where they learned about the prefix tri-.
In grammar, they learned to identify the subject, object, and verb in sentences.
For IPC, they worked on understanding key aspects of identity in relation to each Personal Learning Goal (PLG), which include:
Communicator
Ethical
Thinker
Collaborator
Empathetic
Respectful
Resilient
Adaptable
To reinforce their understanding of each PLG, they did an activity where they had to choose four PLGs that represent them the most and assign a percentage to each, adding up to 100%. Then, they had to find partners who could balance out their PLG profile. The goal of the activity was to identify what they are good at and how others can help them improve in other PLGs.
In literacy, they continued learning about the structure of a complaint letter.
In math, the students practiced addition and subtraction consolidation and mastery. They learned different strategies such as column addition, partitioning, estimation, and solving for missing digits.
Finally, in Spanish, the students learned about el Virreinato.
September 17th - 19th
This week, the P5B students learned how to round integers and how to place, add, and subtract negative numbers during their math lessons. For IPC, they explored ways to improve their learning and discussed the different choices people can make to support their health and wellbeing. They reflected on which situations help them learn better and which ones can make it more difficult to learn new things. In literacy, they continued reading their book Out of My Mind while practicing reading out loud and reading comprehension. In Spanish, they learned about literary genres. This week, the students also reflected as a group on the importance of being respectful. They finished the week with a grammar assessment that included verbs, adverbs, nouns, pronouns, proper nouns, prepositions, adjectives, and conjunctions.

Continuing with the ICP Brainwave unit, the students learned about the metacognition cycle and metacognitive strategies that can help them learn. They also studied the structure and function of a neuron and what synapses are. To reinforce their understanding of this content, they did an activity where they related one word to another using a piece of yarn to simulate how the brain makes connections.
This week, the students also practiced their public speaking skills in Drama class by presenting tongue twisters to the Primary 2 students.

In math they finished their diagnostic tests and they learned about the numbers up to 10, 000. In Spanish class they completed some history and reading comprehension diagnostic exams and a writing exercise of what they did during vacation. In IPC, the students made an exercise where they had to teach a certain skill to one of their classmates and then, learn another skill from their partner. They practiced what methods help when teaching something and what doesn't work that well. They carried on with a goal setting exercise which they should be able to achieve in 4 weeks with some metacognitive strategies that they chose in class. Continuing with the IPC cicle, the students learned about the difference of having a fixed mindset and a growth mindset. Finally they made a literacy exercise where they watched a video and they had to describe what happened and then make up an ending trying to guess what would happen in the story.
