Week 5
Literacy
This week, our students learned what an acrostic poem is and where it comes from. They also identified the main features of this type of poem. To finish the activity, they worked in pairs to create their own acrostic poems and, very bravely, presented them in front of the class!
Numeracy
The students practiced ordering numbers up to 10,000. We also continued reinforcing the concepts we worked on last week, making sure they feel more confident when comparing and sequencing larger numbers.
ICT
We learned about how computers work and what networks are. Through fun and engaging activities, students explored how information travels from one computer to another and all around the world. We also discussed online safety by identifying which types of messages can be safe and which ones may be dangerous, such as viruses.
IPC
In IPC we continued with our unit: How Humans Work – Knowledge Harvest. First, in groups, the students drew an outline of someone’s body and labeled the parts/systems they already knew. The LG was To share what I already know about the human body.
Later, we had a super fun activity where the students became opticians. They first learned about the work of an optician and the different parts of the eye. Afterwards, the students worked in pairs, one as the optician and the other as the patient. We gave them vision test sheets, just like the real ones, so they could test their partner’s eyesight and see if they “needed glasses.” We also gave them magnifying glasses so they could carefully observe each other’s eyes. The LG was To be able to connect scientific investigations to real life. 🧑⚕️👁️🩺
Week 4
Literacy
This week, our topic was Poetry. The learning goal was To write a cinquain poem and then perform it to the class. We also worked on Jolly grammar, and as always, we ended the week with our Spelling Bee.
Numeracy
In Numeracy, we worked on different strategies to strengthen our understanding of numbers. The topics included finding 1, 10, 100, or 1000 more or less than a given number, working with number lines up to 10,000, and estimating positions on number lines. Through these activities, students practiced identifying patterns, building confidence with larger numbers, and improving their estimation skills.
IPC
This week, we started our new unit How Humans Work. Our learning goals were:
To predict how my body will react to exercise.
To share what I already know about the human body.
To self-assess where I am in my learning and to peer-assess where others are in theirs.
As part of our reflection, students thought about how their bodies reacted to exercise (for example, feeling hot, tired, thirsty, or energized). Together, we discussed how the body works like a machine and what it needs to stay healthy: food, water, oxygen, exercise, sleep and care. We also talked about how sometimes our bodies need extra help, and specialists are there to support us.
Special activities
This week, our Year 4 P3A and P3B students were in charge of the Bake Sale with a Cause! The children brought a wide variety of delicious treats to sell during break, with the purpose of raising funds for Casa de la Amistad, a foundation that supports children with cancer by providing treatments, medicine, education, prosthetics, and emotional care.
Our students worked with great enthusiasm and showed wonderful compassion and commitment, all while learning the value of helping others and contributing to such an important cause. 💓
Week 3
Literacy
This week, one of the tasks was to interview an older family member about their school experience. The learning goal was to think of questions to ask a family member about their school experience. We also continued to practice using capital letters and full stops. As always, we ended the week with our Spelling Bee.
Numeracy
This week, we began our first block: Place Value. The learning goals were:
To label, identify, and find missing values on number lines to 1000.
To explore numbers beyond 1000 and represent numbers to 10,000.
To ensure understanding of place value with 4-digit numbers: partitioning into thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones.
To explore flexible partitioning of numbers up to 10,000, understanding that a whole number can be split into parts in many different ways.
Art
During Art class, we continued working on our beautiful portraits! The learning goal was To use markers, chalk pastels and wax crayons to add texture and features to the portraits.
IPC
In IPC, we continued with our Brainwave unit. Our learning goals this week were:
To understand that there are different ways to improve learning – Students watched videos and shared their learning secrets.
To be able to apply metacognitive strategies and reflect on their effectiveness – Students wrote a learning goal connected to the Power of Yet!.
To be able to apply metacognitive strategies and reflect on their effectiveness – Students reflected on the strategies they have used and discussed whether the same strategies are always useful.
To understand that emotions can be managed to support learning – Students began to self-assess how they are managing their emotions and practiced strategies such as the Wheel of Choices.
To reflect on the metacognitive strategies I use – Students used the routine I used to think, Now I think to look back at times when they struggled with learning and how their mindset and strategies have changed.
Independence Day
On Friday 12th, we joyfully celebrated Independence Day at school. In the morning, the students took part in the flag ceremony and performed a moving representation of Mexico’s Grito de Independencia. Afterwards, we enjoyed traditional dance performances, where everyone joined in with happiness, sharing special moments filled with music and culture. To finish, we gathered for a delicious picnic and shared some of our traditional dishes. It was a wonderful day full of pride, tradition, and joy!
Week 2
Literacy
This week in Literacy, the students began with a Cold Task: Summer Writing, where they wrote about their summer vacations. Later in the week, they worked on a collaborative activity, writing captions that highlighted their partner’s interests and uniqueness. In addition, the class reviewed grammar tenses and, on Friday, participated in a Spelling Bee quiz, using the words that had been assigned for study since Monday.
These activities not only helped students strengthen their writing and spelling skills, but also encouraged them to express themselves creatively and to appreciate the individuality of their classmates.
Art
This week in Art, the students created portraits of their classmates. To complement this activity, they combined it with Literature by asking their partners about their interests and unique qualities, which they then used to enrich their work. This integration allowed students to express creativity not only through visual art, but also through thoughtful writing.
Numeracy
In Numeracy, the students completed three assessments to evaluate their current progress and understanding. In addition, they reviewed numbers up to 1,000 and practiced partitioning numbers up to 100.
These activities allowed teachers to identify each student’s strengths and areas for growth, while also giving the children an opportunity to consolidate their foundational number skills.
IPC
This week in IPC, under the Brainwave unit, the students explored important concepts about learning itself.
In the first activity, Chalk Talk: Knowledge, Skills, Understanding, the learning goal was to share what they think knowledge, skills, and understanding mean.
In the second activity, the students revisited their prior knowledge and worked on creating definitions, with the goal to know what knowledge, skills, and understanding mean.
In the final activity, Metacognition: Chalk Talk – Teaching and Learning, the learning goal was to recognize what learning looks, sounds, and feels like.
Through these activities, students reflected deeply on the learning process, developing greater awareness of how they acquire knowledge and skills, and how understanding is built.
Library
This week in the Library, the students visited to have their reading levels assessed and to select a book that matches their current level. This will support them in developing confidence and independence as readers
