September 22nd - 26th
This week, the P5A students worked with a new vocabulary list, where they learned about the prefix “tri-”.
In grammar, they learned to identify the subject, object, and verb in sentences.
For IPC, they worked on understanding key aspects of identity in relation to each Personal Learning Goal (PLG), which include:
Communicator
Ethical
Thinker
Collaborator
Empathetic
Respectful
Resilient
Adaptable
To reinforce their understanding of each PLG, they watched a video and identified which PLGs the characters demonstrated and which ones they could improve on.
In literacy, they continued learning about the structure of a complaint letter. The students created a “letter map” using drawings to represent what the letter was saying, as a strategy to help them memorize and explain the letter to the class.
In math, the students practiced addition and subtraction consolidation and mastery.
Finally, in Spanish, the students learned about el Virreinato.
September 17th - 19th
This week, the P5A students learned how to compare, order, and round integers during their math lessons.
For IPC, they explored ways to improve their learning and discussed the different choices people can make to support their health and wellbeing. They reflected on which situations help them learn better and which ones can make it more difficult for them to learn new things. They also discovered a new concept: the amygdala, a part of the brain that controls strong emotions such as anger and fear.
In literacy, they continued reading their book Out of My Mind, while practicing reading out loud and reading comprehension.
In Spanish, they learned about literary genres. This week the students reflected as a group on the importance of being respectful.
September 8th - 12th
This week, the P5A students learned a new vocabulary list that included words with the prefixes “bi-”, “di-”, and “du-”. They also continued with the Grammar Bootcamp, where they practiced the use of verbs, pronouns, adverbs, and conjunctions.
In literacy, they learned about the structure and elements of a letter and practiced writing one. In maths, they reviewed how to multiply and divide numbers by powers of ten and how to identify the placement of numbers on a number line up to 10,000.
Continuing with the ICP Brainwave unit, the students learned about the metacognition cycle and metacognitive strategies that can help them learn. They also studied the structure and function of a neuron and what synapses are. To reinforce their understanding of this content, they completed an activity where they drew neurons and showed how they connect. They also did an exercise where they related one word to another using a piece of yarn to simulate how the brain makes connections.
This week, the students also practiced their public speaking skills in Drama class by presenting tongue twisters to the Primary 2 students.
Finally, in Spanish, they learned about punctuation and the use of capital letters. They also practiced their grammar skills by writing about their favorite birthdays.
September 1st - 5th
The P5A students started with their first spelling list where they learned about Numerical prefixes for 1 “uni-” and “mono-”. In math they finished their diagnostic tests and they learned about the numbers up to 10, 000. In Spanish class they completed some history and reading comprehension diagnostic exams and a writing exercise of what they did during vacation. In IPC, the students made an exercise where they had to teach a certain skill to one of their classmates and then, learn another skill from their partner. They practiced what methods help when teaching something and what doesn't work that well. They carried on with a goal setting exercise which they should be able to achieve in 4 weeks with some metacognitive strategies that they chose in class. Continuing with the IPC cicle, the students learned about the difference of having a fixed mindset and a growth mindset. Finally they participated in a grammar bootcamp where they made exercises of nouns, pronouns and adjectives.
