Willington Prep - Celebrating 140 years - 1885-2025
Thank you to everyone who visited the Travelling Book Fair, we hope you are enjoying the books you chose. Also a BIG thank you to everyone who donated books for the Children's Book Project to share with families who are less fortunate.
In English, we have been learning more about the tragedy of the holocaust and explored Michael Rosen’s personal poetry reflecting on his family history. We then wrote own letter poems, using the power of poetry to ask find out more and reflect. In Maths this week, we explored transformations - revising reflection and translation before being introduced to rotation.
In Science, we have been learning how to separate mixtures. Our task was to decide which separation techniques to use and in which order to separate a mixture of wax pellets, sand, iron filings, and sugar. In Computing, we have been learning how to enter formulas for basic calculations in Google Sheets. In Latin, having read two contrasting versions of the myth of Midas and the Golden Touch, we discussed the similarities and differences and which version we preferred. We then spent the lesson retelling the myth in our own words, making our own stylistic choices over tone and details.
In Spanish, we have been learning how to ask and talk about age, using numbers up to 31 confidently. We have also practised asking where someone lives and responding with our own hometown. Additionally, we have talked about nationalities introducing basic gender agreement rules in Spanish.
In History, we continued learning about the British Empire, focusing this week on the Transatlantic Slave Trade. We explored what the journey was like for enslaved people and how it affected their lives. In Geography, we looked at countries in Central Africa, especially the Central African Republic. We worked on a fact file by finding information hidden around the room before discussing how problems like poor roads and government instability affect the country today.
Finally, this week in drama we worked in groups on the first phase of our shadow puppet projects, based on an Aesop's Fable. This involved designing our puppets, assigning roles and making a start on writing a script. One group even decided they are going to turn their puppet show into a musical!
Have a lovely weekend,
The Year 5 Team
