Willington Prep - Celebrating 140 years - 1885-2025
We’ve had a busy and creative week in Reception! With spring in the air, we explored the season through still-life watercolour paintings of daffodils. The children carefully observed the shape and colour of the flowers, creating beautiful, detailed artwork.
Inspired by The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle, we planted our own bean seeds and began our bean seed diaries to track their growth. The children discussed what plants need to grow and are excited to see what happens over the coming weeks. We also planted grass, ready for a visit from the Easter Bunny!
In phonics, we focused on vowels and practised building CVC words using vocabulary from Jack and the Beanstalk — words like hen, fell, and mum. The children enjoyed sounding out and blending the letters to make new words, which helped strengthen their reading and writing skills.
We explored seeds in more detail with a practical activity, cutting open different fruits and vegetables, including avocado, kiwi, pepper, and tomato. The children examined the seeds inside, noticing their size, shape, and texture. This sparked lots of curiosity about how different plants grow.
In maths, we focused on number bonds of 6. The children used sorting objects and counted spots on ladybirds to practise finding different ways to make 6. Acting out number stories helped to deepen their understanding and build confidence with this concept.
We were also lucky to have Mrs Hussain share her Ramadan journey with us. The children were fascinated to learn about fasting and the special traditions of this important time.
It’s been wonderful to see the children so engaged and curious — we can’t wait to see how their beans grow! 🌱🌼
Have a lovely weekend and enjoy the sunshine.
